QUAKERS IN NORTH AND WEST CUMBRIA
West Cumbria Area Meeting Cumberland General Meeting
Peace begins within ourselves. It is to be implemented within the family, in our meetings, in our work and leisure, in our own localities, and internationally. The task will never be done. Peace is a process to engage in, not a goal to be reached.
Sydney Bailey, 1993
There is a Quaker Meeting in Whitehaven at which visitors are always welcome.
Whitehaven is a historic seaport town situated on the west coast of Cumbria and within easy reach of Lake District National Park.
The Meeting House is situated close to the centre of the town in Scotch Street (behind the Methodist Church, entrance beside the police station).
Meeting for Worship takes place on the first and third Sunday of each month. All are welcome, not only members but anyone who wishes to enjoy the quiet of a Quaker Meeting.
Enquirers are no less welcome; their questions will be answered but there will be no pressure to take the connection further.
Whitehaven Meeting Today
Some of our members and attenders have come for all their lives, and some have started as recently as this year. We have a variety of ages of both genders, and children are welcome, although we have at present no special children's class.
Our Sunday meetings last an hour, which in essence is a period of silent worship together, during which any of the worshippers present may feel moved to speak. Once a month we stay together afterwards for a talk by one of our number on a subject of interest such as for instance, "How I came to be a Quaker."
There is tea and coffee and time for an informal chat after the meeting.
Meeting for Worship: 1st and 3rd Sundays 10.30 - 11.30am. Children's Meeting: There is no children's class but children are very welcome. |
